How ADA requirements affect lighting choices Section 4.4 of the ADA dictates the proper clearances on objects that hang from the ceiling or protrude from the walls. This affects two types of lighting: wall sconces and ceiling lights.
The guidelines for ADA installation specify that a wall light be no more than 4-inches from the wall and be mounted between 2-feet 4-inches to 6-feet 8-inches above the finished floor. Following these guidelines and using an ADA approved lighting fixture offers maximum clearance. The ADA lighting requirements are just that: requirements. Businesses found to be in violation of these requirements can face fines as well as a loss of reputation. As of 2014, the amount for fines increased for both first and repeat offenses. A first violation can now be fined up to $75,000, while repeat violations can add up to $150,000.

Spacing and stability are the fundamentals necessary to meet ADA guidelines. To start, you will need to make sure your doors and hallways can accommodate a wheelchair. To do this, the doorways will need to be at least 32 inches wide. The area around the doorways must be clear by at least 36 inches.
For instance, in indoor pools, a reading taken 6 inches above the water's surface should indicate a light level of at least 100 foot candles. On outdoor pools, that measurement should be at least 60 foot candles. Illumination levels can be measured using a light meter or photometer. The minimum required ADA hallway width is 36 inches. The standard commercial hallway width is also 36 inches, to account for ADA standards. If a hallway contains any obstructive objects in turning areas, the clear width must expand to provide a sufficient amount of space for people in wheelchairs to successfully and safely make the turn.
ADA COMPLIANT LIGHTING What is ADA Compliant Lighting? The Americans with Disabilities Act requires all wall lighting in public places mounted between 28" and 80" above the floor to project from the wall 4" or less. The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) limits wall-mounted luminaires to four inches in depth when located between 27 inches and 84 inches from the finished floor level of walks, halls, corridors, passageways, or aisles.
